Of Alessandro Gagliano’s sons, Nicolò and Gennaro are generally regarded as the finest makers of the family, and of the two it is Gennaro whose work is often held in the highest esteem. Although he left no descendants in the trade, he is believed to have been the principal teacher of his nephew Ferdinando, carrying his influence into the next generation of the Gagliano dynasty.

This violin is a particularly characteristic and well-preserved example of Gennaro’s work. The front, back, and scroll retain a generous and rarely encountered coat of original reddish-brown varnish, allowing the quality of the maker’s work to be appreciated with unusual clarity. His careful workmanship, refined eye for detail, and strong Cremonese influence are evident throughout.
