Labeled, "Simon Johannes Havelka fecit Lincii, 176..." Bearing a repair label of Carl Hermann Voigt, 1873.
Branded to the button, "F. G."
LOB: 42.0 cm
The instrument passed through Rembert Wurlitzer Co. in circa 1950, where it was photographed alongside its label as a reference example—an indication of its interest and importance within the tradition.
Built on a Stainer-inspired model, the viola departs from the extreme arching often associated with Tyrolean and Bohemian instruments of the period. Instead, it offers a more moderate and practical arching, combined with a comfortable back length of 42.0 cm, making it particularly accessible for players. The varnish is a richly pigmented, thick reddish-brown of notably higher quality than the more opaque, oxidizing finishes often encountered in Viennese work of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Tonally, the instrument offers a warm, focused sound with a clear core and a pleasing depth across the lower register, balanced by a responsive and articulate upper range. It stands as both a distinctive historical example and a musically rewarding viola.
