90: A VIOLIN BY GAETANO SGARABOTTO, MILAN, c. 1910

Labeled, "Enricus Ceruti fecit Cremonæ anno 1872 E. F. G."

LOB: 35.7 cm

This violin was made by Gaetano Sgarabotto in Milan, in circa 1910 and shows the characteristic wood selection and stylistic features associated with the maker. It is made as a copy of Enrico Ceruti, reflected in both its model, finer details and the label it bears. It’s interesting to note how the maker imitated the details of an early 19th century style neckset, with the belly edge running continuously beneath the neck block. In very good overall condition, this violin presents an appealing example of Sgarabotto’s early work.
