A VIOLIN BY ENRICO MARCHETTI, TURIN, c. 1905

123: A VIOLIN BY ENRICO MARCHETTI, TURIN, c. 1905

Labeled, "Joseph Rocca fecit Taurini Anno Domini 1861 Premiato di Medaglie alie Esposizioni di Torino, Genova, Londra e Parizi."

Branded to the upper block and twice to the inner rib, "G. R."

LOB: 35.8 cm

This fascinating violin, made as a loose imitation of Giuseppe Rocca, shows Marchetti’s iconic style even when copying another maker. In particular, the splay of the soundholes, the thin blacks of the purfling and the long purfling mitres are all typical tells of Marchetti’s work. The clear orange-brown varnish has depth and transparency with a delicate craquele and is typical of Marchetti’s most interesting work.
