165: A VIOLIN BY STEFANO SCARAMPELLA, MANTUA, 1909

Labeled, "Stefano Scarampella di Brescia Premiato con Medaglie d'Argento Fratello ed Allievo del Giuseppe Fece in Mantova anno 1909."

Inscribed to the inside top, "...B Paris 1912, 6." Branded to the button, "S. S."

LOB: 35.7 cm

A fine and well-preserved example from Stefano Scarampella’s most sought-after period, this violin was made in Mantua in 1909. It stands as a particularly attractive specimen by one of the most revered and coveted Italian makers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, combining bold craftsmanship with striking visual and tonal presence.

The instrument retains a plentiful red varnish characteristic of Scarampella’s work from this period, beautifully accentuating the highly flamed maple of the back. Its overall condition is excellent for its age, with a freshness that is rarely encountered in examples of this maker.

The violin bears its original label and Scarampella’s brand, “S.S.”, to the button. Built on a slightly broader model, it reflects a form particularly appreciated by musicians for its power and breadth of sound, qualities that have long contributed to Scarampella’s enduring reputation among performers.
