ex-Monte Hoffman
Labeled, "Sebastien Vuillaume a Paris 27, Boulevard Bonne Nouvelle."
LOB: 76.1 cm
The work of Sebastian Vuillaume is relatively rare in comparison with that of his uncle, Jean Baptiste. Nevertheless, there exist some exceptionally beautiful instruments by this maker such as this fine cello. Made on a Stradivari model with top-quality tonewood, this cello broadly resembles the work of J. B. Vuillaume but with notable differences in the finishing of the corners, head and soundholes.
This cello is sold by the heirs of Monte Hoffman, who was a long-standing member of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Hoffman joined the BFO in 1964 after having graduated from the Eastman School of Music. His teachers include Orlando Cole, Leo Sachs, Leonard Rose, Ronald Leonard, Michael Grebanier, and Mischa Schneider. He also attended Meadowmount, studying chamber music with Joseph Gingold, Oscar Schumsky and William Kroll.
