125: A VIOLIN BY JOHN FREDERICK LOTT II, LONDON, c. 1860

Labeled, "...Baptista Guadagnini Pla. ...nus fecit Mediolani 17..."

LOB: 35.8 cm

Jack Lott is best known for his copies of instruments by Guarneri del Gesù, but this spirited violin is a rare example inspired by Guadagnini’s Milan period. The features of Guadagnini are well observed and immitated: the wide bouts, triangular corners and the brilliant strong-red varnish. Even quirks like the flaring of the c-bout ribs towards the top when viewed from the side – most commonly seen on Guadagnini cellos – are expertly copied by Lott. Only the sound-hole design – more Guarneri than Guadagnini – seems to betray Lott's unfamiliarity with this model. This rare and intriguing violin was featured in the December 1994 edition of The Strad Magazine.
