Labeled, "Giuseppe Pedrazzini Cremonese fece in Milano 1910." Signed to the label.
Inscribed to the lower block, "Pedrazzini."
LOB: 35.3 cm
This attractive violin, made by Pedrazzini in 1910, was conceived as a copy of G. B. Guadagnini, however, in actuality, it reveals more of the character of the maker than the instrument he was copying. The outline is copied from a 1750s Guadagnini, and the soundholes are faithful imitations of Guadagnini’s unique design, although in execution the work feels stiff and slightly awkward. Likewise, the purfling and edges are attempts to mimic but they also feel slightly forced. The scroll reveals Pedrazzini’s treatment of the final turn of the volute and also his tendency to carve the fluting deeply and overexaggerate the central scribe line. The varnish is of a warm orange-brown color of good clarity. While only partially successful as a copy, this handsome specimen nonetheless showcases Pedrazzini’s disciplined and elegant approach to making.
