12: A CELLO BY PIETRO SGARABOTTO, PARMA, 1976

Labeled, "Petrus Sgarabotto Mediolani fecit Parma anno Domini 1976 'Maria Callas'."

Inscribed to the upper block, "S. G. 1976." Inscribed to the inner upper treble rib, "Pietro Sgarabotto."

LOB: 75.1 cm

Cellos by Pietro Sgarabotto are seldom encountered, making this example notable within his output. Nicknamed “Maria Callas” by the maker, in keeping with the Parma tradition he helped establish of naming instruments after famous historical personages (see the viola, lot 31 of this catalog), the cello is conceived on a bold and assured model with first-rate materials. The workmanship is confident and structurally grounded, with clear proportions and purposeful arching. Aptly named, the instrument is noted for a voice of breadth and expressive character.
  • Proforma Certificate: Jason Price, New York, NY (Feb 18 2026)
  • Dendrochronology report: Sondre Lie, Oslo (Jan 23 2026) Dates the latest ring of the bass and treble side as 1970 and 1973, respectively.
