158: A VIOLIN BY ENRICO ROCCA, GENOA, c. 1905

Labeled, "Joseph Antonius Rocca fecit Taurini anno Domini 1847."

LOB: 35.4 cm

This violin by Enrico Rocca, made in Genoa circa 1905, is a fine and clear-cut example of the maker’s work, dating from the center of his most active and accomplished period. As was common practice in the workshop, the instrument bears a facsimile label of his father, Giuseppe Rocca.

The violin features a beautifully flamed one-piece back of high-quality maple, finished with a rich reddish golden-brown varnish over a lighter ground. It presents a particularly attractive and well-balanced example, showing Rocca’s assured hand and sensitivity to materials.

While Enrico did not quite attain the level of his father, he remains a significant figure in late 19th- and early 20th-century Italian violin making. During this period, his work began to move away from certain Turin conventions—such as the use of locating pins on the back—resulting in instruments that display a more individual and streamlined character.

Characteristic in all respects, this violin captures the essence of Enrico Rocca’s mature style, offering both visual appeal and a strong sense of personality.
