94: A VIOLIN BY STEFANO SCARAMPELLA, MANTUA, c. 1895 ‡

Unlabeled.

Inscribed illegibly to the inside top.

LOB: 35.7 cm

This remarkable and well-preserved violin by Stefano Scarampella, made in Mantua in c. 1895, is an important and rare example of his pre-1900 period, and offers an unadulterated view of the maker’s working style before the involvement of assistants such as Gaetano Gadda who joined the workshop in later years. The violin features a beautiful, luminous golden blonde varnish which highlights the handsome, pronounced flames of the maple back and the violin’s superb materials. The varnish colour is characteristic of this period and contrasts with the red colour which the maker used more frequently after the turn of the century. The appealing model is well-proportioned and its f-holes resemble Rogeri – with a pronounced perpendicular deviation in the upper and lower wings – echoing a strong Brescian feel and reflecting these maker's origins.

Freshly preserved and in excellent condition, this attractive and collectible specimen demonstrates the talent that established Scarampella as a master of his era at the beginning of the 20th century, and as one of the most sought after makers of all time.
