95: A VIOLIN BY CAMILLO CAMILLI, MANTUA, 1749 ‡

Labeled, "Camillus Camilli fecit, Mantuae 1749."

LOB: 35.4 cm

This violin, dated 1749, displays many typical characteristics of Camilli's work, including the round, open c-bouts, large locating pins set on the center joint and a vibrant, strong-bodied orange varnish.

Camilli's labels are usually handwritten and variations in spelling and handwriting are common. These inconsistencies are likely due to the maker's presumed illiteracy, suggesting the labels were written out for him by others, possibly the local parish priest.
