ex-Paul Glass
Labeled, "Joseph Gagliano filius Nicolai fecit Neap. 17..."
The upper treble rib replaced.
LOB: 35.5 cm
A typical example of late 18th-century Neapolitan violin making, this instrument displays the confident, quick and not overly-fastidious workmanship that makes Gaglianos reliable performers' instruments. The deep brown varnish with reddish undertones has mellowed attractively with age, while the upright and slightly high-set soundholes are typical of Giuseppe and his brothers' work. The violin was previously owned by the American composer and violinist Paul Glass.
Glass, known for his work as a performer and educator, championed both contemporary composition and the rediscovery of neglected repertoire. In 1961, Glass sold the violin to Rembert Wurlitzer in New York and a year later it was purchased by the father of its current owner.
