112: A VIOLIN BY WILLIAM & CHARLES VOLLER, LONDON, 1916

Labeled, "William & Charles Voller London 1916. The Rudolph Wurlitzer Co., New York. Replica of a violin by Antonius Stradivarius, circa 1715 - 1720."

LOB: 35.6 cm

The Voller brothers were highly regarded as copyists, known for their detailed and scholarly understanding of classical Italian models. Their work is characterized by precision, consistency and a strong command of historical forms. It seems that the brothers made a series of instruments for Rudolph H. Wurlitzer in 1916-1917; four instruments are currents of this set are currently known to us. In the 1930s those instruments came for sale through the Wurlitzer firm in New York. This violin, a copy of a 1715-1720 Stradivari, shows the brothers' ability to make a compelling copy of the great maker, without it being a copy of a specific instrument.
  • Dendrochronology report: Sondre Lie, Oslo (Feb 16 2026) Dates the latest ring of the bass and treble side as 1898 and 1881, respectively.
  • Letter certificate: Rudolph Wurlitzer Co., New York, NY (Jul 9 1945)
