Labeled, "Joannes de Tononis fecit Bononiæ in Via S, Mamuli 17..."
The head later.
LOB: 35.9 cm
Carlo Tononi was trained in his father's workshop but his instruments quickly surpassed those of his father in terms of refinement, aesthetics and tonal quality. The model of this instrument is inspired by Nicolo Amati, with a well proportioned outline, strong arching, and neatly finished edges. The varnish is of an attractive golden-brown color with subtle texture. The f-holes are elegantly set and carefully cut, contributing to an overall impression of balance and clarity. Instruments from this period display a style unconstrained by the conventions of his father's workshop, signifying his preparedness for the move to Venice, a journey he would undertake in 1717.
