Labeled, "Nicolaus Amatus, Cremona..."
Amati model. The head later.
LOB: 35.2 cm
Nicolo Gagliano violins are typically built on a Stradivari-inspired model but this rare and interesting instrument is inspired by Nicolo Amati. The one-piece back in slab cut maple is a departure from typical Gagliano style but fully appropriate for an Amati copy. We know of only a handful of other Amati model Gagliano instruments but interestingly, dendrochronology found the two most significant cross-matches to this violin to be instruments attributed to Gennaro Gagliano, Nicolo’s elder brother and collaborator.
