Finance Manager (NY)

Position: Finance Manager 

Location: NYC – open to London-based hire 

Contract: Full Time, Permanent

Salary: 115k -130k, Commensurate with experience and capabilities 

Hours: 5 days in-office (10am-6pm)

About the role:

Tarisio is seeking an experienced Finance Manager to join our international auction house. Reporting to the COO and working closely with our Finance Lead, this pivotal role will oversee financial operations across our NYC, Berlin, and London offices. The ideal candidate should have a strong understanding of the unique financial considerations in the auction industry and a willingness to navigate international financial processes. Experience with auction houses, retail/inventory financial analysis, and international financial reporting is preferred.

Core Responsibilities

  • Work closely with UK and Berlin operational leads to support cash flow management, P&L optimization and financial compliance
  • Manage overall business cash flow and working capital requirements
  • Develop financial processes and structures including comprehensive financial planning and analysis strategies
  • Serve as primary liaison between our external accountant teams to ensure our tax filings are accurate and timely
  • Provide direct support with Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable processes during peak auction periods
  • Lead special financial analysis projects as needed for strategic business decisions

 

Financial Management

  • Oversee day-to-day financial operations and ensure compliance with accounting standards
  • Develop financial models to forecast revenue, expenses, and cash flow
  • Create and analyze financial reports for executive leadership
  • Monitor financial performance against budgets and KPIs
  • Support with private sales process

Operational Efficiencies 

  • Identify opportunities for operational efficiency and cost management 
  • Develop SOPs and improve financial processes
  • Proactively look for ways to to streamline systems 

Auction Management 

This role will collaborate across departments to support the auction cycle and drive operational efficiencies. During peak periods, it will also involve direct participation in the auction process, including overseeing and assisting with various tasks outlined below:

Pre-/During Auction

  • Coordinate with specialists to establish financial targets based on consignment quality and market conditions
  • Create cash flow forecasts that account for consignor advances, marketing expenses, and anticipated settlement timelines
  • Monitor real-time financial performance during live auctions
  • Oversee payment processing systems to ensure seamless transaction handling
  • Manage deposit requirements for high-value bidders
  • Provide financial reporting to company stakeholders

Post-Auction 

  • Oversee the complete settlement process, ensuring timely payments to consignors
  • Analyze auction results against financial projections and prepare variance reports
  • Manage accounts receivable for purchased lots, including follow-up on outstanding payments
  • Process seller’s commissions, buyer’s premiums, and other auction-related fees
  • Coordinate with shipping and logistics teams to reconcile costs with client invoices
  • Produce comprehensive post-auction financial reports for stakeholders. Present financial insights to inform future consignment strategies and auction planning
  • Analyze performance metrics including sell-through rates, average lot values, and premium income
  • Compare results across different auction categories, seasons, and locations
  • Identify trends and opportunities for financial optimization in future auctions

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field; MBA or CPA preferred
  • 6+ years of progressive experience in financial management
  • Demonstrated experience working with international teams across multiple time zones
  • Strong understanding of auction house operations or retail/inventory analysis
  • Advanced proficiency in financial software and Excel
  • Experience with multi-currency transactions and international financial regulations is a plus
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to explain complex financial concepts clearly
