Domenico Busan
Violin maker
(c. 1720 – 1783)
Domenico Busan was born outside Treviso and probably arrived in Venice around 1743-44. If this date is correct, the location of his apprenticeship is unknown, as Matteo Goffriller had died in 1742. In any case, surviving examples of his work date from 1747 to 1782, during which time he seems to have worked as a violin maker, musician, and possibly restorer. Busan sold his instruments through the Ongaro family workshop, and his work bears marked similarity to makers of that family. Though not quite as refined as those of other Venetian makers, they showcase numerous characteristics of that school. More personal features include the particular sculpting of the scroll and the f-hole shape.
