Johannes Theodorus Cuypers
Violin maker

One of the most prominent makers from The Netherlands and among the first to turn away from Amati in favor of a Stradivari model, Johannes Theodorius Cuijpers worked in the Hague from 1752 to till the early 1800s. It has been suggested that he received some training in France, but historical evidence on the subject is inconclusive. His early works, which date from before 1775 or so, are especially elegant, though his later work becomes more heavy. His personal style features upright heads that are flat on the back, and his instruments, of which many remain, produce a consistently good and powerful tone. Cuijpers' sons Johannes Francis and Johannes Bernard also took up violin making, with less distinguished results, and their involvement in the workshop may in part explain the robustness of his work after 1795.
