Barak Norman
Violin maker

The late-17th-century viol maker Barak Norman was one of the most important figures in the transition to violin-family instruments in the English tradition. His earliest known viol dates from 1689, and by 1692 he had set up a workshop in St. Paul's alley, where he worked supplying instruments to various London shops and makers, including John Hare. A series of fine Italian-inspired violin-family instruments appear after 1704, of which the cellos are especially well regarded. Norman was assisted significantly by Nathaniel Cross starting in 1713, and both of their names appear together inside examples from the workshop until Norman's death in 1724. His various manuscript labels include the words 'at the Bass Viol'.
