Matthias Albani had an important influence on the work of Tyrolean violin makers in the 17th and 18th centuries. His work, which is often confused with that of his father, Matthias Albani I, is generally on a Brothers Amati model, with an attractive orange varnish inclined to craquel.

In the 1660's Albani was active ...Read More in Rome in the workshops of Martino Arz and Andrea Portoghesi. In the early 1670's he re-established in Bolzano and his earliest label dates from 1683. The bulk of his production dates from 1690-1710 which suggests that his violin making sons Joseph and Michael may actually have been responsible for their elderly father's work.
